Medicare Wrongly Paid $12M For Prisoners' Drugs, HHS Says

Law360, New York (February 10, 2014, 4:11 PM EST) -- Medicare Part D improperly paid $12 million during its first five years for prescription drugs used by prison inmates, according to a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services inspector general’s report Monday that found challenges with quickly relaying incarceration records from regulators to insurance companies.

The report estimated the $12 million figure by looking at a sample of 100 individuals from a larger population of 23,000 beneficiaries who were jailed and released between 2006 and 2010. In half of those cases, Medicare covered prescription drugs...
