Patriot Coal Ordered To Halt Plant Operations After Spill

Law360, New York (February 12, 2014, 7:21 PM EST) -- West Virginia regulators shut down a Patriot Coal Corp. plant on Wednesday following a 108,000-gallon coal slurry spill, issuing an imminent harm order against the company for releasing chemicals not allowed in state waters.

The spill from Patriot's Kanawha Eagle Prep Plant occurred Tuesday and was likely caused by a faulty valve in the slurry pipeline, according to the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection. The agency said an enforcement action against Patriot is pending.
