Settlement Can't Nix Sanctions In Univ. Of Phoenix Patent Suit

Law360, New York (February 12, 2014, 7:29 PM EST) -- A Virginia federal court ruled last week that Digital-Vending Services International LLC will still face sanctions imposed during its patent suit against the University of Phoenix even after it settled the case, saying the court wouldn't “hide” Digital-Vending's discovery abuse.

Digital-Vending sued the school over patented technology for regulating access to computer network-delivered content, but after a ruling in favor of Phoenix in October, Digital-Vending agreed to drop an appeal and settled the case in November.
