Aiphone, Apple Resolve IPhone Trademark Spat

Law360, New York (March 24, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A Japanese intercom maker has reportedly reached an agreement with U.S.-based computer giant Apple, Inc., settling their trademark dispute over the iPhone.

Kyodo News reported Monday that Aiphone Co. Ltd. had announced the deal after months of talks with Apple.

Aiphone claimed that Japanese characters for Apple's iPhone could infringe on those for its Aiphone trademark because the spellings are similar in the Japanese katakana syllabary, Kyodo News reported.
