JPML Centralizes Lipitor Diabetes Suits In SC

By Brian Mahoney (February 18, 2014, 7:33 PM EST) -- The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation on Tuesday agreed to centralize in South Carolina federal court 56 lawsuits alleging Pfizer Inc.'s blockbuster cholesterol drug Lipitor causes Type 2 diabetes, reversing a prior decision declining consolidation.

The JPML said in an order that a spate of related filings against Pfizer had caused it to reconsider its July order declining to centralize the suits. The panel said that plaintiffs' counsel has increased significantly since then and that informal coordination and cooperation are no longer practicable.
