IRS Criminal Investigations, Conviction Rates Jump

Law360, New York (February 24, 2014, 6:22 PM EST) -- The number of criminal investigations the Internal Revenue Service initiated — and the percentage of cases that resulted in a successful prosecution — spiked in 2013 as the agency stepped up its enforcement activity, the IRS said Monday in a report.

IRS' Criminal Investigation unit initiated 5,314 probes in 2013, an increase of 12.5 percent over the previous year. Convictions also rose more than 25 percent last year compared to 2012, which the agency said reflects the quality of the cases it brings to prosecution....
