Hospital Group Urges CFPB Caution On Debt Rulemaking

Law360, Washington (February 28, 2014, 8:40 PM EST) -- The top lawyer for a hospital advocacy group on Friday asked the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to consider the unique attributes of medical debt when issuing future rules and guidance and setting agency policy.

Melinda Reid Hatton, senior vice president and general counsel for the American Hospital Association, asked the CFPB to avoid across-the-board definitions for terms like “delinquency” and “in default” in the context of medical debt, saying medical debt collection processes operated different than those in other industries, like the credit card industry....
