Budget Cuts Threaten IRS Program For Low-Income Taxpayers

Law360, New York (March 5, 2014, 8:17 PM EST) -- An Internal Revenue Service program for low-income taxpayers helped secure more than $5.8 million in tax refunds and eliminate $35.5 million in tax liabilities, penalties and interest in 2012, the agency announced Wednesday, but budget cuts might create an even greater need this year.

The IRS' Low Income Taxpayer Clinic employs its own staff, but also receives help from 2,300 volunteers who donated 59,000 hours of work to the program in 2012.
