Groups Urge Obama To Drop USDA Poultry Inspection Rule

Law360, New York (March 7, 2014, 5:35 PM EST) -- More than 100 consumer groups and other organizations pushed President Barack Obama on Thursday to drop the U.S. Department of Agriculture's proposed overhaul of chicken and turkey slaughter inspections, saying it would jeopardize food safety.

Under a rule proposed by the USDA in January 2012, agency employees would focus only on the most important inspection activities in poultry plants. They would not conduct activities such as examining carcasses for bruising and other visual defects, leaving the tasks to food company employees.
