WTO Rules EU Failed To Justify Hormone Meat Ban

Law360, New York (March 31, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The World Trade Organization has ruled that the European Union failed to justify its ban on imports of beef treated with hormones, supporting sanctions imposed by the United States and Canada against the EU.

In two complicated and lengthy rulings published Monday, the WTO allowed the U.S. and Canada to maintain duties imposed on many European imports — such as Roquefort cheese, truffles and chocolates — after finding that the EU’s decision to ban imports of hormone-treated beef violates international trade rules.
