FERC Orders Power Authority To Craft Grid Security Rules

Law360, New York (March 10, 2014, 11:53 AM EDT) -- The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Friday ordered the North American Electric Reliability Corp. to develop standards to protect the U.S. grid from physical attacks, following an assault on a Pacific Gas & Electric Co. transmission substation in California last spring.

The commission ordered NERC, which is tasked with ensuring the reliability of the U.S. bulk power system, to develop reliability standards requiring bulk power system owners and operators to address risks due to physical security threats and vulnerabilities.
