Fed. Circ. Won't Reopen Feud Over 'Abstract' Acacia Patent

Law360, New York (March 10, 2014, 5:52 PM EDT) -- A subsidiary of patent-licensing company Acacia Research Corp. lost a bid to revive an infringement suit against EMC Corp. and others on Monday, with the Federal Circuit affirming that its asserted patent claims were not valid because they covered an abstract idea.

In a one-word order, the Federal Circuit affirmed a California federal court’s finding that patent claims asserted against  EMC, NetApp Inc. and Quantum Corp. by Compression Technology Solutions LLC were “impermissibly abstract,” meriting dismissal of the suit.
