Wis. Court Lets Chartis Off Hook For Gas Explosion Suits

Law360, New York (March 12, 2014, 3:45 PM EDT) -- A Wisconsin appeals court ruled Wednesday that Chartis Specialty Insurance Co. has no duty under a contractor's pollution liability policy to defend four lawsuits over injuries and property damage caused by a gas explosion.

The appeals court overturned a ruling requiring Chartis to reimburse general liability insurer Acuity, a Mutual Insurance Co., for half of the defense and indemnification costs in lawsuits against Dorner Inc. over the explosions, which were caused when Dorner employees disturbed an underground natural gas line during excavation.
