Eyeing Putin, EU Advances Fracking-Friendly Policy

Law360, New York (March 14, 2014, 7:00 PM EDT) -- The European Union recently decided to exclude shale gas operations from tough new environmental rules, a move that experts say reflects a growing prioritization of energy security that will only increase as geopolitical unrest continues to surround natural gas-rich Russia.

The European Parliament on Wednesday passed an updated environmental assessment directive that will include about 200 types of projects, including bridges, ports and landfill sites. Assessments will have to consider new environmental factors, including diversity and climate change.
