Enviros Claim Allete Coal Plants Skirting Pollution Limits

Law360, New York (March 25, 2014, 4:00 PM EDT) -- The Sierra Club on Monday said that three coal-fired power plants owned by Allete Inc. unit Minnesota Power have committed nearly 13,000 violations of the Clean Air Act and vowed to sue if the company didn't clean up the plants.

The environmental group claimed that Minnesota Power's Boswell, Taconite Harbor and Laskin coal plants in northeastern Minnesota have violated permitted limits for the opacity of their emissions — an indicator for the amount of particulate matter contained in emissions — over 10,000 times.
