Canadian High Court Takes Chevron's Ecuador Appeal
Law360, New York (April 3, 2014, 2:38 PM EDT) -- The Supreme Court of Canada said on Thursday it will review an appeals court’s holding that Ecuadorean plaintiffs may continue to seek part of a $9.5 billion award they won against Chevron Corp. in Ecuador by targeting Chevron’s Canadian assets.
Chevron had appealed a Canadian appeals court’s December ruling that allowed the Ecuadorean plaintiffs to go after the company’s Canadian assets, estimated to be worth $15 billion. A three-judge panel of the Court of Appeal for Ontario reversed a lower court’s stay of the action, which the plaintiffs brought in May 2012 to enforce the Ecuadorean judgment.
