FDA Links More Deaths To Heparin

Law360 (April 9, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has dramatically increased its count of people who died while taking blood thinner heparin.

The FDA said Tuesday that there have been 103 reports of death associated with the blood thinner since Jan. 1, 2007, and that 91 of those incidents were reported to FDA on or after Jan. 1, 2008.

However, 62 of those deaths included one or more allergic symptom or symptoms of hypotension, which is abnormally low blood pressure. Of that statistic, 56 deaths were reported to...
