Cubist Finds Contaminant In Popular Antibiotic

Law360, New York (April 10, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Cubist Pharmaceuticals Inc. discovered traces of an industrial chemical in its antibiotic drug Cubicin and issued a warning to regulators and consumers last week not to use the brand of disposable pump that caused the contamination.

Stability tests of Cubicin, which is marketed in dry, cake-like form, revealed that reconstituted batches stored in ReadyMED elastometric infusion pumps made by Cardinal Health Inc. were contaminated by 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, or MBT, a chemical used in the manufacture of rubber.
