China Eyes Life Sentence For Producing Unsafe Food

Law360 (April 21, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Producing unsafe food could land perpetrators in prison for life, under China's proposed food safety law, unveiled on Sunday.

After several food scares in the last year and enormous international pressure, China has pledged to make product safety in the country a priority.

Under the draft law, producers of substandard food products would face fines, the confiscation of their incomes and revocation of production certificates. In the most serious cases, they could also face jail terms ranging from three years to life.
