"Copyleft" Philosophy Embedded In New Draft Agreement

By Marius Meland (February 24, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- The Free Software Foundation's January 2006 release of the first discussion draft of GPL version 3 (GPLv3), the first revision of the GPL since the dissemination of version 2 (GPLv2) in 1991, reflects the FSF's free software philosophy, a concept referred to as "copyleft." Basically, a copylefted program includes the rights to use, modify and redistribute the program's code or any derivative program, but only if the distribution terms are not changed downstream. The right to modify the code requires the downstream availability of source code as well as machine or object code....
