Wash. Warns Employers, Insurers Against Same-Sex Bias

Law360, Washington (June 6, 2014, 7:12 PM EDT) -- Washington state officials on Thursday warned insurance companies and employers about its anti-discrimination insurance laws after learning that some same-sex couples had been denied coverage that had been offered to opposite-sex couples.

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson said in a letter that it appeared some insurers and employers were discriminating against same-sex couples by failing to offer dependent coverage.

“Refusing to provide dependent coverage to same-sex spouses when that coverage is provided to all other spouses is a practice that discriminates based on sexual orientation,” Ferguson wrote...
