Obama Calls For Major Expansion Of Pacific Ocean Preserve
By Andrew Westney (June 17, 2014, 6:55 PM EDT) -- President Barack Obama on Tuesday announced plans that could expand a protected Pacific Ocean area by nearly nine times, raising alarms at the prospect of closing off a great expanse of the ocean to energy production and fishing.
Obama proposed new executive actions in a video message to attendees of the U.S. State Department's "Our Ocean" conference, calling for protections of vulnerable environments near the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument in the south-central Pacific Ocean, according to a White House statement.
