Brazil Threatens to Break Roche's HIV/AIDS Drug Patent

Law360, New York (December 9, 2003, 12:00 AM EST) -- The Brazilian government has reportedly issued new threats to break Swiss drugmaker Roche's patent for Viracept (nelfinavir), unless the company concedes a greater price discount on the HIV/AIDS treatment.

The Brazilian government has been playing hardball with multinational drugmakers to bring down the cost of HIV/AIDS drugs. Last month, Merck and Bristol-Myers Squibb both conceded substantial discounts.
