Medtronic Yanks Heparin-Coated Cardiac Devices

Law360, New York (May 8, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Furthering the fallout over heparin, Medtronic Inc. said Wednesday it was recalling certain disposable medical devices used during cardiac bypass surgery because they may be coated with the tainted blood thinner.

Medtronic said it had initiated a “voluntary and precautionary” recall of selected products featuring the Carmeda BioActive surface following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's April 8 recommendation to device manufacturers that heparin supplies be checked with newly developed tests, and that affected products be evaluated for possible field corrective action.
