Green Groups Win Partial Victory On Alaska Leases

Law360, New York (May 19, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In a partial victory for environmentalists, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management announced Friday that it would defer oil and gas leasing on 650,000 acres of wildlife and resource-rich land around Teshekpuk Lake in northwest Alaska.

The BLM will still proceed this fall to sell leases on nearly four million acres of the northeast National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. But at the same time, it agreed not to open up 219,000 acres of Teshekpuk Lake and its islands along with 430,000 acres north and east of the lake...
