Belgian PM Continues Battle Against French Utilities

Law360, New York (March 17, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt, worried that the impending merger between French utilities Gaz de France SA and Suez SA would dominate his country’s energy market, has asked the European Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes to investigate the matter.

GDF, the French state-controlled gas utility, and Suez, which owns the Belgium company Electrabel, announced a deal last month that would combine the two energy giants. Some critics have assailed the merger plan as characteristically French monopolistictic behavior.
