Belgian PM To Hold Talks On GDF-Suez Merger

Law360, New York (March 20, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt plans to hold discussions with the French energy utilities Gaz de France SA and Suez SA in order to obtain market concessions on their blockbuster merger deal.

Verhofstadt has expressed concern that the impending merger between the two French energy giants would control too much of Belgium’s energy market, resulting in increased prices and job losses. Some critics have assailed the merger plan as characteristically French monopolistic behavior.
