ITC Opens Probe Into Epson's Ink Cartridge Allegations

Law360, New York (March 22, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- The U.S. International Trade Commission has opened an investigation into ink cartridges imported by nearly two dozen companies, responding to allegations of patent infringement from Japan’s Seiko Epson Corp.

The investigation targets replaceable ink cartridges, the sales of which threaten the models sold directly by Epson. Epson and its rivals depend heavily on ink cartridge sales, making the ink cartridge industry highly litigious.

Epson asked the ITC to issue a general exclusion order barring the firms from importing and selling infringing cartridges in the United States....
