PTAB To Eye Sipco Network Patent Asserted Against Comcast

Law360, New York (November 19, 2014, 3:30 PM EST) -- The Patent Trial and Appeal Board has instituted an inter partes review of a networking patent owned by Sipco LLC, which over the years has hit several companies, including Comcast Corp., with infringement suits over it, finding that the petitioner has shown the patent is likely invalid.

The board, which instituted the review under the America Invents Act, on Monday said that petitioner HART Communication Foundation, which governs standards surrounding digital automated controls in industrial environments, had provided enough prior art evidence to indicate a successful challenge that the patent is invalid as obvious.
