Lawmaker Pushes DOJ To Block JBS Takeover

Law360, New York (June 24, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The head of the U.S. Senate panel on antitrust policy has urged the Department of Justice to block JBS Swift & Co.'s proposed $1.1 billion takeover of Smithfield Beef Group Inc. and National Beef Packing Co., reasserting concerns voiced by several lawmakers.

If JBS Swift, the third-largest beef processor in the United States, acquires National and Smithfield, the fourth- and fifth-biggest beef processors, respectively, it would leave only three competitors to share over 80% of the market for steer and heifer slaughter, Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.)...
