EU Probes Calcium Carbide Suppliers For Price-Fixing

Law360, New York (June 27, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The European Commission is investigating a slew of companies that supply calcium carbide and magnesium powder for price-fixing in breach of European Union antitrust laws, the commission announced Friday.

Although the European Commission did not officially name the companies under investigation, several companies confirmed they had received statements of objections notifying them of the allegations against them, Dow Jones reported.

Dutch chemicals company Akzo Nobel reportedly received a statement of objection regarding its calcium carbide activities, a spokesperson said.
