U.S. Gives Antitrust Clearance To BHP-Rio Tinto Deal

Law360 (July 3, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Global mining giant BHP Billiton Ltd. has won preliminary antitrust approval in the United States for its $170 billion hostile bid for Rio Tinto Plc.

BHP said Thursday that the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission had ended the antitrust waiting period on the deal early and concluded a review of the proposal without further action under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act.
