Actos Was Pa. Man's Biggest Bladder Cancer Risk, Expert Says
By Matt Fair (January 20, 2015, 6:16 PM EST) -- Setting aside a history of smoking and other risk factors, an expert witness told a Philadelphia jury on Tuesday that years of taking the Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. diabetes drug Actos was the most significant contributor to the bladder cancer that a retired western Pennsylvania teacher was diagnosed with in 2008.
University of Colorado oncologist and bladder cancer specialist Shandra Wilson testified that plaintiff John Kristufek's long-term use of the blockbuster diabetes drug was the likely cause of his bladder cancer and that the risks posed by his 25-year history of smoking were substantially reduced after he quit in 1990.
