EU Lawmakers Vote To Cap Airline CO2 Emissions

Law360, New York (July 8, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In an overwhelming vote that drew harsh criticism from the airline industry, European Union lawmakers approved an agreement Tuesday to include the aviation industry in the EU's emissions trading scheme.

The 640-30 vote confirms a deal reached between the European Parliament and member countries last month to require all airlines flying to and within the EU to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 3% by 2012.

Under the scheme, emissions from flights will be capped at 97% of their current level in 2012 and will be reduced...
