FDA Warns Avastin May Cause Anemia

Law360, New York (July 15, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Genentech Inc. has issued a warning that Avastin, its blockbuster cancer drug, may cause anemia when used in combination with Sutent, a cancer treatment manufactured by Pfizer Inc.

The warning, issued Friday by the pharmaceutical company and posted Monday on the Food and Drug Administration's Web site, states that in a 25-patient study sponsored by Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, five of 12 patients receiving Avastin and high doses of Sutent showed signs of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, a form of red-blood cell loss.
