PTO Application Changes To Hit Bio, Pharma Hardest

Law360 (April 27, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- As the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office prepares to implement proposed changes to continuing application procedures, patent prosecutors and the government remain at odds about how the alteration will affect certain industries in the United States.

The change, which would limit a patent application to a single continuation, is one of many approaches the embattled USPTO is making to reduce its staggering backlog of applications. Like many other proposed changes, it could also have the added benefit of reducing legal disputes.
