Regulators Conclude Merck's Gardasil Is Safe

Law360, New York (July 23, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- U.S. regulators concluded Tuesday that Merck & Co. Inc.’s Gardasil remains safe and effective protection against a virus that causes cervical cancer despite reports of adverse effects, including death and paralysis.

After reviewing more than 9,700 reports of adverse effects, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Gardasil, which was approved two years ago, remains safe for use in girls and women between 9 and 26 years of age.
