Meat, Produce Retailers To Disclose Food's Origins

Law360, New York (July 29, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture put forward a new rule on Tuesday requiring meat, fruit, vegetable and nut retailers to notify their customers of their food's country of origin, preparing retailers to comply with a provision in the Farm Bill set to take effect this fall.

The agency's interim final rule details the provisions that retailers will have to begin following by Sept. 30 by defining who will be subject to the regulation and what types of food will have to carry country-of-origin labels.
