U.S. House Votes To Extend E-Verify Program

Law360, New York (August 5, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has passed an amendment to extend the government's contentious E-Verify employee verification system, in a vote that has drawn criticism by civil liberty groups.

The House voted 407-2 on Thursday to extend the pilot program for another five years and to keep it voluntary for all but government contractors.

The bill, which will now move to the Senate for a vote, is a compromise on calls to extend the program for 10 years and make it mandatory for all employers. The...
