Online University Pulls Patent Application in Rift With AOL

Law360, New York (October 15, 2003, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Grantham University in Louisiana has agreed to withdraw its application for the trademark "America's Online University" under pressure from America Online, newswires reported.

The online university, which offers its 5,000 students degrees in computer science, business and engineering, will withdraw its application because it cannot afford the legal fight against America Online, Chief Executive Tom Macon told the Associated Press.

An AOL spokesman said the company is compelled to combat any erosion of its brand, which could lead to the devolution into a generic name....
