Ecuador Offers To Broker Chevron Settlement

Law360 (August 14, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Ecuador Inspector General Diego Garcia has reportedly offered to negotiate an out-of-court settlement between Chevron Corp. and 30,000 Amazon residents to end a nearly 14-year-old legal fight over environmental damage.

"We are willing to facilitate an agreement," Garcia recently told Reuters. "We are not part of the process ... the message is that we will only step in as a facilitator if both sides want us to."

Chevron is accused of polluting the environment when it was the exclusive operator of a 1,500-square-mile concession in Ecuador...
