Merck Study Was For Marketing: Report

Law360, New York (August 19, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A Merck & Co. clinical study of the now-withdrawn medication Vioxx was a marketing tool intended to increase sales rather than a study to examine the health benefits of the drug, according to a new medical journal report.

The study known as Advantage was intended to get doctors to prescribe the blockbuster painkiller, which was pulled from the market in September 2004, an article published Tuesday in the Annals of Internal Medicine said
