Diocese Starts Selling Property To Pay Settlement

Law360 (May 25, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Moving toward paying off millions of dollars in clergy sex-abuse claims, the bankrupt Catholic Diocese of Spokane, in Washington State, has put its bishops’ main office building—the chancery—up for sale.

The office building is part of $11 million in assets claimed by the diocese when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December 2004, which is just a fraction of the $80 million the court said could be raised by selling off all church property.
