CMS Unveils Major Overhaul Of Nursing Home Oversight
Law360, New York (July 13, 2015, 7:58 PM EDT) -- The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services on Monday floated a far-reaching set of new protections for nursing-home patients, drawing mixed reviews from an industry that has acknowledged the need for reform but also fears the hundreds of millions of dollars in added compliance costs.
CMS' 400-page proposed rule marked the first comprehensive update of nursing home regulations since 1991. Since the last update, Medicare's annual nursing home population has almost tripled to 1.8 million people, not counting Medicare Advantage beneficiaries, and clinical needs have become more complex, the agency said.
