MIT Scores Partial Win In 'Backseat Driver' Suit

Law360 (September 10, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A federal judge has granted the Massachusetts Institute of Technology partial summary judgment against Harman International Industries Inc. in a suit over a "backseat driver" patent for a car navigation system that produces spoken directions.

Judge Douglas P. Woodlock of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts ruled that three of the claims in MIT's patent are not invalid due to the "printed publication" bar and also denied cross-motions for summary judgment as to whether the patent was invalid for being in public use...
