Exxon Pays $4M To Settle Groundwater Pollution Suit

Law360, New York (September 17, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- ExxonMobil Corp. agreed to pay a record $4 million to settle the Maryland Department of Environment's lawsuit over an undetected gas leak at a service station that contaminated surrounding groundwater supplies.

Under the agreement, Exxon consented to the largest civil penalty ever levied by the MDE and promised to pay additional penalties if the company fails to meet the continuing remediation requirements set forth by the agency.
