Canada Fight Over Donziger's $9.5B Chevron Judgment Is On
By John Kennedy (September 4, 2015, 4:20 PM EDT) -- Canada's highest court ruled Friday that plaintiffs representing about 30,000 indigenous Ecuadorians can seek enforcement in Ontario court of a $9.5 billion pollution judgment that attorney Steven Donziger secured against Chevron Corp., which quickly pointed out that Friday's decision does not presage the plaintiffs' success.
The 47 plaintiffs had sued Chevron and subsidiary Chevron Canada Ltd. in Ontario in May 2012, seeking to enforce the judgment in Canada. Chevron appealed that court's jurisdiction ruling, saying the Ontario court had no jurisdiction over the matter.
