RIM, Apple Hit With Suit Over Smart Phone Patents

Law360 (September 29, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- WiAV Solutions LLC sued smart phone manufacturers Research in Motion Ltd. and Apple Inc. on Friday over 10 patents for various cellphone technologies, most of which the company licenses from network infrastructure company Mindspeed Technologies Inc.

The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, asserts patents covering global systems for mobile communications, wideband code division multiple access communications and adaptive multirate "voice characterization and/or compression codecs."

GSM and W-CDMA are two systems used to transmit cellular communications, and AMR is a standard used to encode or decode speech audio, often in conjunction with GSM....
