New Rule Makes Ships Slow Down To Avoid Whales

Law360, New York (October 13, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Large ships will have to slow down in areas where severely endangered right whales are likely to be, according to a long-awaited federal government rule that has been greeted with praise, as well as some concern, by environmental groups.

Under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's new rule, ships over 65 feet long will have to reduce their speeds to 10 knots in areas along the East Coast of the United States where right whales feed, reproduce and travel during migration in order to avoid colliding...
