UN Adopts New Rules On Ship Pollution

Law360, New York (October 17, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The United Nations has stepped up its efforts to limit greenhouse gas emissions, adopting new rules aimed at reducing pollution from ships and preparing a draft of a new rule on safe ship recycling for consideration next year.

The Marine Environment Protection Committee, a branch of the U.N.'s International Maritime Organization, announced on Oct. 13 that it has unanimously adopted amendments to MARPOL Annex VI, an international convention on ship-related pollution currently signed by 53 countries.
